School students in Madurai can be radio jockey for a day on All India Radio

 

MADURAI: Becoming a radio jockey is no longer a distant dream for school children as All India Radio (AIR) Madurai has taken an initiative to provide them a chance to act as radio jockey (RJ) on a live programme for a day. A Class VIII student from a Sivaganga village was the first to be an RJ on Friday.
"Many can only dream of hearing their voice for a minute or so on the radio. However, I got the opportunity to have my voice heard by thousands on live radio broadcast for an hour by being an RJ and providing my commentary. It was a unique experience to interact with listeners on the spot," said M Divyasri from Chairman Manickavasagam Middle School, Devakottai. The student was made RJ for the programme, 'Kannaadi Maaligai' for which the topic of discussion was 'young generation'. Divyasri interacted with at least 12 callers including an 83-year-old man who shared their experiences when they were young. Praising the girl's efforts, AIR Madurai station head Tara Devi presented her a book.
School headmaster L Chokkalingam said students were trained by teachers for weeks to become comfortable acting as a radio jockey before going on air on Friday. "It is not easy for a child to become an RJ suddenly as many even struggle to give a small speech continuously. An RJ has to have quick thinking and respond on the spot. We made Divyasri answer calls from teachers so that she got a practical experience to reply quickly. We also helped her frame some basic questions," he added.
The students had earlier recorded programmes for AIR Madurai after which the school approached the station officials exploring the chances of students becoming RJs. The officials said any school interested in giving its students a chance to be RJ for a day can approach AIR Madurai.
